The sacral chakra, also known as the second chakra, is located between your pelvis and your belly button, including your reproductive organs. Orange is the color of the sacral chakra.

The sacral chakra is all about power, sex, creativity, and money. This is the chakra where sone bodies can physically weave a baby. This is the chakra where you can metaphysically conjure up and birth creative (non-human) offspring.

If the sacral chakra is blocked, creative output can be at a standstill, and it can seem like other yummy aspects of life are stuck in a dry-spell too. When the sacral chakra is spinning out of control, we leak our emotions onto other people at inappropriate times.

When you’re consciously engaged with your sacral chakra, your personal relationships with power, sex, creativity, and money can move toward balance.

Following are a bunch of fun, specific, and simple ways to work with your sacral chakra:

GET HANDSY – When I’m focusing on this chakra, it feels really good to place my hands on my tummy. Another nice place I can put my hands is on my hips bones. For me, those placements are super intimate, grounding, and power-full. When I’m listening to sacral chakra music, making a sacral chakra vision board, doing financial work, endeavoring on a new creative project, or feeling turned on by the thought of a crush, there’s little else that feels more grounding to me than my own touch on my own second chakra zone.

MAKE A SACRAL CHAKRA ALTER – The intention of this exercise is to make some physical space in your living environment to honor whatever comes up as you work with your sacral chakra. Having a visual reminder that you’re doing this work can be really helpful. Also, setting this situation up can be hugely playful and interacting with / tending to the alter as you go along can be a wonderfully satisfying act of self care.

When I made my first sacral chakra alter, I grabbed every single orange thing I could find around my house. I’m talking everything: every orange art supply, kitchen item, article of clothing, fruit, piece of jewelry, you name it. I covered my surface that was the base of my alter with everything orange. It was super cluttered and kind of unpleasant for me to look at.

That cluttered state was an excellent reflection of where I was at internally with my sacral chakra and all that the second chakra represents. At the time I was feeling very financially insecure, super disconnected from pleasure and my own sexuality, and at a crushing standstill creatively, hesitating to make art and downright refusing to share what I was begrudgingly creating with anyone else.

Seeing my sacral chakra alter helped me understand that I really had some work to do with myself in these areas. I sat with the extremely uncomfortable and judgmental feelings that arose for me during the two weeks I had committed to focussing on my sacral chakra. Whenever those negative thought came up, I said to myself, I’m willing to change.

HAVE SOME COMPASSION FOR YOURSELF – If clutter, dis-ease, dis-comfort, or resistance is coming up for you as you start to pay attention to your sacral chakra, say thank you. More is being revealed and what was once confidential is no longer being kept from you. When you’re willing to change, you don’t have to know how the change is going to occur. In fact, right now, that’s none of your business. New information can’t show up until we interact with the information that is here now.

READ UP ON MONEY, SEX, CREATIVITY, AND POWER – For me, books have literally fallen off of shelves and been handed to me by friends at just the right moment. If you’re looking for some stellar resources on sacral chakra topics, here are my top recommendations.

Books on Conscious Sex and Romance Intimacy: Urban Tantra: Sacred Sex for the Twenty-First Century by Barbara Carrellas, A Course In Love by Joan M. Gattuso

Money Books: MONEY Master the Game: 7 Simple Steps to Financial Freedom by Tony Robbins, Money A Love Story: Untangle Your Financial Woes and Create the Life You Really Want by Kate Northrup, The Little Money Bible: The Ten Laws of Abundance by Stuart Wilde (the audiobook version of this one is particularly delightful)

Books on Creativity: What It Is by Lynda Barry, The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert (I also love the audio version of this book)

Get Into Your Power, Books For That: The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte, Be Here Now by Ram Dass, Pronoia is the Antidote for Paranoia: How The Universe Is Conspiring to Shower You with Blessings by Rob Breszney

GET SOME BACK-UP IN THE FORM OF BODYWORK – Don’t know how to connect with your body? Allow someone who’s an expert on this topic to help you out. Reiki, massage, yoga, and pelvic floor intensives have all changed my life and my relationship to my body. I can’t recommend this practical support highly enough. Go see someone who’s the real deal. The return I’ve received in my life on these financial and time investments continues to surprise and delight me.

If your budget is tight, call up local bodywork schools to find out when discounted or free student clinics are happening. Another fabulous option is bartering. If you feel like you don’t have money to trade for someone else’s bodywork magic, what skill sets can you offer to someone else in return for their vital contribution to your healing journey?

LEARN ABOUT CONSENT – Practice saying the word “yes” loudly a few times. Pause to feel how that feels in your body. Practice saying the word “no” loudly a few times. How does that feel in your body? So, yes means yes, and no means no. How about “maybe” . . . what does that mean? Going forward, maybe means no. If it’s not a big, real, full-body YES, then it’s a no.

Read more about yes, no, and maybe here.

PLAY SOME MUSIC – Spin some tracks that help you connect with your sacral chakra and all that represents to you. I love grooving out to my Turned On – Sacral Chakra / Second Chakra playlist on Spotify in front of my bedroom mirror, alone in my car shout-singing along, and during sweaty exercise times out in the world with friends.

AFFIRMATIONS FOR THE SACRAL CHAKRA – These phrases are great to use in mirror work, during prayer time, and as alarm messages throughout the day on your phone. Feel free to make up your own second chakra affirmations and allow your words to change as your journey shifts.

– There’s more where this comes from. (I like saying this one to myself when I pay for things.)

– I feel turned on to life.

– I am a talented person.

– My creativity blesses others.

EAT ALL THE ORANGE FOODS – Carrots, tangerines, clementines, grapefruit, peaches, nectarines, honey, sesame oil, mangos, and good ole oranges. Yum. Yes, eating delicious orange foods does count as working with your sacral chakra.

GET VISUAL – Make a sacral chakra vision board about what you’re seeking in the land of creativity, money, power, and sex. I look at my sacral chakra board on Pinterest whenever I want to focus on manifesting balance in that realm of my life.

CHILL OUT AND HAVE SOME FUN – This isn’t serious. You’re not in trouble. There’s no “wrong” or “right” way to get to know your sacral chakra. When in doubt, the best way to get plugged in with yourself is to play like you did when you were a kid. One of my fav ways to work with my second chakra is to hula hoop and laugh.
