The question, “What is Reiki?” usually comes a few minutes after the question, “What do you do?” On that second question, I often find myself shapeshifting in my answer. I have a wide range of passions, and when I’m feeling cheeky I’ll respond, “I do what I want, and I have a lot of fun!”

That answer is true, and also, I know people are asking (without asking), “What do you do for work to make money?” When it’s the right audience, I’ll share some of my perspectives on money love healing, and when I get the sense that people just want to know what in the world my job is, I go with this:

Professionally, I’m an artist and healer who creates and manages unique websites for exceptional people, places, and things. If I get the vibe that someone might be “into it” I’ll also share that I’m a Reiki Master who offers one on one sessions and classes for people who want to practice Reiki for their own wellbeing, too.

Okay Leah Moon, but WHAT IS REIKI?

Reiki is a holistic healing practice, mostly facilitated through gentle touch, that originated in Japan through the teachings of Mikao Usui toward the end of the 19th century. Receiving a Reiki session helps the receiver tap into their own inner wellspring of healing.

During a typical Reiki session, after a check in conversation, the receiver lays fully clothed on a bodywork table, with blankets, pillows, and other props for comfort. The Reiki practitioner might gently lay their hands on the receiver’s body in a protocol of hand positions from head to toe, down the body.

After hundreds of hours of practice, my style is more intuitive. I often move around to different body parts in an unexpected order, so each session is unique. I like to incorporate music, other sounds, crystals, herbalism, and occasionally business coaching into Reiki sessions if those elements resonate with my client’s needs and requests. Normally, including some talking before and after table time, my Reiki sessions last between 60 – 90 minutes.

What does Reiki do?

Reiki can feel restful, healing, and supportive through life changes. Some practitioners believe that our bodies are quite wise, and are able to come into greater wellness and alignment through the gentle touch of Reiki.

With great benefit, I’ve given sessions to people who are going through the following range of life experiences:

» Physical Illness

» Injury Recovery

» Career Transitions

» Healing from Trauma

» Mental Health Challenges

» Support on Creative Journeys

» Fertility, Miscarriage, Pregnancy, Birth, Post-Partum

» End of Life Support for Individuals & Families

» Assistance through Spiritual Awakening

» Rest & Relaxation

How did you get into Reiki?

That’s another fav question people like to ask me, and I have a pretty good answer, if I do say so myself.

First, you should know that I’ve always been into healing touch before I understood what that was or had any professional training. In fact, when I was 10 years old, my cousin asked me to be with her during childbirth, to play with her hair and gently stroke her shoulders as I intuitively did throughout her entire pregnancy.

Reiki first came into my life in 2009, the summer after I was diagnosed with skin cancer. Unsurprisingly, that was a super painful and scary chapter of my life! Receiving Reiki sessions helped me to physically heal from my surgery and gave me a weekly container of time to feel my emotions in a safe space.

A few years later in 2013, I had an emotional, mental, and physical meltdown. I totally bottomed out. In a rare moment of quiet, I heard an inner voice suggest that I learn how to practice Reiki. Through tears, I signed up for my first Reiki class, and the rest is history.

In school, I learned how to give myself a Reiki session, which I’ve done every day of my life since that first class. From the onset, life began to improve for me as I invested in this form of self care. As I learned how to be present with myself through Reiki, I got sober, and began to find out who I am, what I like, and how I want to live.

After 5+ years of school learning how to give Reiki sessions and how to be a Reiki Master teacher, the basic self-practice I learned at the beginning of my journey remains my greatest personal treasure.
